About This Site

Pick Scuba Diving Gear publishes first-hand reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on the gear recreational divers actually carry: dive lights, neoprene boots and gloves, mesh gear bags and underwater metal detectors. Every piece is written from real shore and charter dives in the Florida Keys, with the limits of each product stated as plainly as its strengths.

Diving Safety

Scuba diving carries real risks, including drowning, decompression sickness and lung overexpansion injuries. Dive only within your training and certification, never alone, and stay inside recreational depth and time limits. Nothing on this site replaces training from a certified instructor or the advice of a physician. See a doctor before diving if you have any heart, lung or ear condition.

The gear covered here is not life-support equipment. A dive light can fail, so carry a backup on night dives. Boots and gloves reduce cuts and cold but do not prevent them, and slippery ladders and rough shore entries injure divers every year. Check a detector or light for leaks before each dive, and rinse and dry lithium-ion batteries and chargers as the maker directs, away from water.

Metal detecting and removing objects from the water is restricted or banned in many marine sanctuaries, parks and historic wreck sites. Check local rules before you hunt, and never disturb coral or living reef.
